New Dexis Sensor!

Wasn't sure I would ever see the day, but Dexis has just announced a brand new sensor! It's called the Dexis Platinum Sensor. Here are some of the key points:
1. The new sensor is 15% thinner than the previous one.
2. Direct USB connection...no USB box or PC Card interface.
3. Larger active image area.
4. Pricing is likely to be the same as the older sensors (no official confirmation yet).
5. They will likely offer some type of trade-in if you just purchased an older sensors (no official confirmation yet).
Stay tuned for more details as I hear about them. Don't bother going to their web page...it's not even on there yet.

Doesn't matter how much thinner the sensor is, it can't compare (in terms of comfort to the patient) to the ScanX.
I LOVE my ScanX!!!!!!!!

Scan-X is great for offices that want high comfort, don't need the speed of hard sensors, see a lot of kids, etc. Of the 650+ offices we've installed with digital x-rays, I estimate that hard sensors outnumber phosphor plate systems 3:1.

It was on their web page temporarily yesterday. What took them so long?I also think their charges for maintaining support are outrageous. After 5 years I could have bought a whole new system

They should offer a credit for trading in any sensor. Start rewarding the dentists that purchased the dexis a couple of years ago and where told the archaic pc card is the best way to connect. It reminds me of Kulzer. They used to have a curing light that used saline instead of fiberoptic and insisted that this was the best system.

I agree that the yearly replacement costs are too high. I also think that they will offer a trade-in of my type, but I doubt it would apply to sensors purchased two years ago. You don't get a new car when they come out with a new model...same story here.

It is true that you don't get a new car when they come out with a new,but most cars come with 3 to 5 year warranties. They are charging close to 2000 a year for support that I haven't used in two years.I can also trade in my car. However, I don't expect them to give me a new sensor for free but if I have paid almost 8000 in support (I received one CD upgrade and spoke to them on the phone twice) in 4 years I think I should get some significant discount. After all they will make more sales from a happy customer than a disgruntled one. I have the DEXIS and most of the time love it. However, I want to scream louder than the kids or small adults when trying to place the very think sensor in their mouth. When I first purchased the system I was far from a computer expert. The more I learned the more I realized the whole PC card was outdated. Then they came out with a box (for over 1000 dollars) to connect it to the USB port. If you call them now they deny saying a new sensor is coming out. When you buy a car you can find out when a new model is coming out and if it will have significant improvements or just cosmetic changes. Then you can make an educated decision.

As a dental integration specialist, I am very excited to see this new sensor. To this day I have yet to meet an unhappy Dexis owner. Looking forward to the asthetic and diagnostic potential with this product.

How much is a replacement sensor? No one can give a straight answer.

I've seen a few quotes that had a replacement sensor priced at $6800. That's for the sensor only...no connection box, software, etc.

The boss is very unhappy with the customer service with Dexis...purchased 2 sensors and within the first 18 months one went out! Replacement at the time 6000.00 well he was still paying for the system that was supposed to SAVE him money...and unknowingly did not renew the highly priced product warranty...waited until he had the6000.00 to purchase a new one...low and behold THEY WONT SELL HIM A NEW (old style) SENSOR for his system....must buy a new one...AND NO TRADE IN FOR THE ON THAT WONT WORK!!!!
Now he wants to jump ship get a new system...of course we (the staff dont want to learn another new system...but who can blame him...They have Doc right where they want him....anyone know how to get a digitil sensor that goes with the card???

This new tool in dentistry is so great. I think it would be very useful. I will share the information to my Orange County Dentist so that he would be updated with the new gadgets in dentistry.

We have 4 (FOUR) dead Dexis sensors over the past 4-5 years, plus 3 PCMCIA "paddles" and 2 USB hubs. Given that each sensor cost around $10K (about the price of a [very cheap] small car) the longevity of these is pathetic.
The last of these died today.
We also have 2 Dexcams (paid over $5K each for those), both dead. We were on support for the second one and they still would not fix it after 2 repair attempts. I don't know if lemon laws apply to this kind of stuff and I don't have the energy to chase these guys. Ended up buying cheap intraorals on Fleabay for less than $200 each and don't feel bad throwing them away after 1 year.
Moral: Stay away from Dexis!
I hear Kodak wants $25 (no zeros!) per month to extend their warranty for years 4 & 5 (i.e about $600 for two additional years of warranty). I am seriously considering these...

It is a good kind of sensor but i also recommend Spectra™ Caries Detection Aid:•FDA Cleared
•TWAIN Compliant
•Hand-held
•Non-invasive imaging instrument
•Visually aids in the detection of caries
•Operates using fluorescence technology
•LEDs project high-energy light onto the tooth surface causing cariogenic bacteria to fluoresce red and healthy enamel green.

Cosmetic dentistry is all about improving your smile. Some people have broken, chipped, stained or missing teeth and with a valley cosmetic dentist they can get the smile they always dreamed they’d have.

Dexis has terrible customer service, and their sensors do not hold up. I plan to get another system.

The price of the sensor and the price of the warranty is nothing to complain about. They tell you the price when you buy it and tell you the warranty cost. I advise you look at some other options not just schick and dexis before making a big purchase like this, there are about 20 other sensors out there at about half the price and same or better image quality.
But that aside my issue with this sensor is the use of the A connection on a standard usb cable to move the sensor around. This connector is only rated for 1000 disconnects. You can check the wiki on USB A/B connections. USB mini B lasts for 10,000 disconnects.
Lorne here has a great blog where he talks about new dental technology, but I was extremely irritated with the Dental Products Report, no price, no warranty information, they essentially took a dexis 1 sheet add and posted it up like it was a review.
Why do we allow these companies to keep pricing and warranty information secret. Dentists should be able to find this information on the net without having to literally call every sensor manufacturer or trust that their patterson or schein rep is telling them the truth and isn't just trying to push the product that gives them the greatest commission.
Hopefully a small USB extension cable can be used with this platinum sensor otherwise that connection will last about a year.
